So, what’s first?
There are a number of things that need to be done. We need to begin educating people on what Libertarianism is. We need to get people into office. We need to raise money. We need to build a base of supporters. We need to do a whole lot of things. Prior to doing ANY of those things we need to JUST OUR ATTITUDE.
Yes, you read it right. And yes, this is probably only the first in a string of things I might say that will piss people off. Regardless of how you feel about what I say, the facts are the facts; it is what YOU and other Libertarians decide to do with them that will determine the fate of the party.
Libertarians are very principled people. Perhaps they are the most principled people in the world. The rift in the party after the platform changes a few years back should have woken up the national party to that fact. Unfortunately, it did not.
While we may be the most principled people, we are also the most assuming. We ASSUME that when we see something wrong everyone else sees it too. We ASSUME that when we want it changed that everyone else wants it changed too. We ASSUME that things which are obvious to us are obvious to everyone else. We ASSUME that the changes should be so obvious that we want them to occur instantly. We all know that assume makes an ASS out of U and ME.
Government rules by acquiescence (people ask for their help and end up slaves) or by conquest (do it or we will punish the bad slave). In either case, WE ARE THE SLAVES. So long as we continue to deal with the government on the government’s terms we will remain their slaves. We need to realize that WE THE PEOPLE control the government and not the other way around. Until people begin to understand that fact and live IN that fact, we will always remain where we are today.
We need to STOP the growth of government before we can shrink government. We cannot stop the growth of government if we play by the governments rules. It must be the other way around.
Think of the country like a body. If a body has a severe cut and was bleeding profusely until its heart stopped, what would you do? Would you get the heart going again or would you stop the bleeding? Most people will say “get the heart going again”. Of course – this is the wrong answer. Once the heart is going again the blood will pour out of the body. WE MUST STOP THE BLEEDING FIRST. That means we MUST stop the growth of government first before anything else. We don’t need people in office to do this.
As Libertarians, most of us believe that if we can get people into office we can change the world. This might be true, but it won’t just “happen”. You have to have a plan of attack. You have to have people willing to carry out that plan. You have to have strategies in place that can handle the changes. It is NOT necessary to have people in office to effect change. You just need to begin educating people and get them to hold the government accountable for their actions. Once that is done you can get people into office that will do their job right.
Again – we must stop the bleeding first – then move on to getting the heart re-started. This should be the current and primary focus of the Libertarian Party. Everything we do should be geared toward that direction. If this election cycle shows us nothing else it should have proven to everyone that people are fed up with the government that they will grab at anything to make it better. Even if that means they put a worse person in to power then the people already there.
The Republican Party is fractured. Many of their people came over to the Libertarian party a few years back. They wanted to have the Libertarian party a little more moderate then it was and set out to change the party platform. That change splintered the Libertarian Party and allowed Bob Barr to run in this election cycle. We can all see where that got us. It is time to return to the party principles and time to put together a plan that will work. NOTE: I did say a plan…not just complaining but actual action items that will work toward a specific goal. It is time to stop the bleeding.
